History

On August 12, 1956 a long held dream of many prominent personalities (including the then chief minister of Orissa, Biju Patnaik) was fulfilled, just after two years of establishment of the IIT in Kharagpur. UCE started with three departments - Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering. At that time the current building was not finished so the college started in a building now known as the "Bharati Club" and students lived in quarters of the Hirakud Dam project. This technical institute has graduated more than 16,000 engineers placed in organizations (such as NASA, GM, DRDO, Microsoft, Airbus, NALCO, GE,Department of Telecommunications,Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, Indian Railiways Service,Indian Broadcasting Services, HAL, Facebook, Google, Youtube, Flipkart, Zinga.com), and in institutions (such as Harvard University, MIT, Wharton, LSE, Oxford University, Stanford University, University of California, Berkeley, White House, IIT, IIM).

Campus

Located at the foothills of the Hirakud Dam, Asia's longest earthen dam, Veer Surendra Sai University is a few kilometers away from the intersection points of NH-06 and NH-42. The campus covers and area of 200 acres (0.81 km2) amidst the hills and the river Mahanadi. The one way access route from NH-06 stretches up to the "Golden Jubilee" gate at the entrance of college.

To the left of the gate stands the college library, the oldest and the largest technical library in Orissa, while to the other side there is the college auditorium, again only one of its kind in the State. The campus encompasses department buildings, the Administrative Block, a workshop, one central internet facility and a number of laboratories. With its emphasis on physical education, the college has a gymnasium and a Yoga Center for its students. The campus has a playground, and one court each for basketball, volleyball, tennis and badminton.

Courses

The university confers the degree of Bachelor of Technology in the following disciplines:

The University offers a Range of Graduate Programs in Engineering and Natural Sciences (Master of Technology, Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy). Admission to these Programs is awarded strictly through performance of Candidates in State or National Level Tests and on the basis of prior Academic Record.

Student housing

The University has a long history of facilitating an extremely close knit community among its students. It's perhaps one of the few Institutions in India which provides an on campus living experience to almost all its students. The University fosters the most unique spirit of Camaraderie among its students which is evident in the Volume and Scale of Alumni Involvement in the growth of the University.

Some of the Student Halls of Residence are as follows:
